Why do Old People have a large Vocaulary?

My mother is 84 years old and has a better vocabulary than most teachers. This is probably why I have a high interest level in any word game out there. Especially word games that focus on words containing double letters. I also like games that challenge me to say words that start with a certain letter. Now I'm not sure if I'm getting better at this or if my memory is starting to wear out, but I can't remember a time when I got most of the words on those word lists. My Uncle is 78 and due to some medical issues he can no longer work. He spends all of his time sitting and reading books, watching tv, and doing crossword puzzles. His favorite pastime though is to read the dictionary. I don't know if it is something that he is doing now because he has too much free time or if it's something that he always did. He always seemed to find words in the dictionary that were new to him, and he would impress all of us kids.
